Marrakech has been named African Capital of Culture 2020, a display of today's urban Africa that highlights the range of African cultural expressions, according to Mohamed Larbi Belcaid, Marrakech's mayor.

Marrakech, this century city that has been inscribed in the universal heritage twice, first via its medina in 1985 and then as intangible heritage in 2001, will carry the hues of African culture in 2020, he said.

Marrakech, a world-renowned tourist destination, has a significant hotel infrastructure, tourism, events, sports, and cultural density, as demonstrated by the network of museums, traditional and modern art centers, he explained.

Marrakech can launch a pilot edition of the African Capitals of Culture because of its human soil, concern for multiculturalism, and the richness of its heritage, he said, calling for the establishment of a Marrakech 2020 organizing committee as well as an Afri-capitals organizing committee in Marrakech.

The African Capitals of Culture initiative, which will be introduced for the first time, envisions itself as a significant event that will be rooted and piloted in Africa and will spread globally. It is a project that brings together and strengthens the knowledge, know-how, and talents on the continent and in the Diaspora that help to shape today's Africa and the world of future.
